Workshop practice

Key points: K-line versus CAN bench
- K-line versus CAN bench: do the identification and power steps before any write.
- Two identical reads define a usable original. One mismatched dump is scrap.
- ecuflashfiles.com is originals; ecufilemarket.com is Stage 1 and deletes.
EDC15 and many EDC16/ME7 jobs are K-line. EDC17, MED17, MDG1 and SIMOS18 are CAN. Using a K-line cable on a CAN ECU gives you a timeout, not a brick — unless you also feed ignition with CAN floating. Put the right pair on first.
Where original files fit
Keep the matching virgin dump. Search ecuflashfiles.com by software number. Do not use a ‘similar engine’ file.
Original dumps sold on ecuflashfiles.com are for restore, comparison and workshop use. Stage 1 and delete work belongs on ecufilemarket.com. In some regions DPF off, EGR off, OPF / GPF off, SCR / AdBlue and even Stage 1 may be used only on off-road and competition cars. Confirm the law where the vehicle is registered.
FAQ: K-line versus CAN bench
Why does K-line versus CAN bench matter before a write?
Most bricks come from skipped identification, weak PSU voltage, or checksum left off — not from the map itself.
Should I keep a clone or a virgin file?
Virgin + immo alignment, or a full clone, but not a mix. See the clone vs virgin guide on this site.
Where are Stage 1 files?
ecufilemarket.com after you upload the original. This site is the restore library.
